The Pacific Islanders, also derogatorily known as "Kanakas", were brought in as cheap labour. They were essentially a form of slave labour. Europeans would go out in ships and lure the Islanders aboard with trade offers, then kidnap them and sell them. Farmers wanted to use cheap labour to make their farms more economically viable: the Islanders cleared the land, ploughed it, planted the cane, chipped out the weeds, and harvested the cane, all of which was very hard work. Few white men were prepared to do such back-breaking work, for such long hours, but the Islanders had better endurance and strength.
