I am the one who asked this question. I am a Remington fan, but I never heard of the Model 78. I loaded some ammo for a friend that owns a model 78 and when measuring the lands if realized that the overall length of the bullet was much longer than rifles I have loaded for in the past. When I looked up the Model 78 I saw that is was only produced for about 4 years and wondered why.

Because the bolt stop is broken..they have a plastic bolt stop.

Well, it would help to know which gun your model 512 is, but for now I will assume it is a Remington SportsMaster 512. The bolt stop may be worn, broken or dirty. Take it to a gunsmith for examination and repair as needed. Parts wear out.
First take off the stock. Second pull down on the bolt stop pin located in front of the trigger. Third while holding down on the bolt oin remove the bolt.
The 878 was discontinued in 1962

If you look at the very back of the receiver on the left side there will be a small tip of the bolt stop showing in the left bolt guide channel, push it down while the bolt is open and pull back on the bolt. Should fall out .
