The answer is unknown. If you do not like my answer look it up some other place. They just disappeared when the others came back. The only clue was Croatoan carved in a tree. They might have gone to the island Croatoan and maybe they never made it. This is just a guess.

Roanoke was named the lost colony because the first time people settled and some went back to england. Well the people that went back they came back to Roanoke but the people that settled dissapeared. The only thing that was left was a tree with the carving " CROATOAN" . Nobody knows what happend , still investigating-a 4th grader
First came the Roanoke colony that dissapeared mysteriously when the next ship came. Then Jamestown was founded. Jamestown was the first successful permanent English settlement.

John White left Roanoke Island to go back to England. He told the colony that he'd be back in about 7 months to get some more supplies. (The colony was starving.) When he got to England, it was at war with Spain. It took 3 years to get back to Roanoke Island. When John White returned, everyone had dissapeared. ALL 100 PEOPLE HAD GONE MISSING.IF THERE IS A BETTER ANSWER, PLEASE IMPROVE.
