Rome and Carthage fought each other for the control of the Mediterranean trade. Whoever controlled the trade routs, controlled the wealth.
The three wars between Rome and Carthage were all won by Rome. Both city-states paid a heavy cost in lives in fighting each other in what are called the Punic Wars. The result of the wars was a reduction and finally the total destruction of Carthage. Rome on the other hand began its empire as a result of placing important lands in the Mediterranean Sea under their control.

Carthage did not give anyone to Rome. Rome captured prisoners of war, but they were not actually given to her by Carthage. Rome demanded that Carthage surrender Hannibal to her, but he fled into exile in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Punic Wars where three wars between Rome and Carthage, all won by Rome. Both were vying for supremacy against each other. Unfortunately for Carthage, Rome won all of the three wars. Maybe the most famous war, the Second Punic War involved Hannibal, a famous Carthage general leading a surprise attack on Rome, led by his war elephants. However, the Roman general, Scipio, led an attack on Carthage and Hannibal had to retreat to save his capital city. In the third Punic War, Rome finally completed the defeat of Carthage and the civilization of Carthagians was destroyed.
