The number may not have been that high, but more than 4000 Polish officers were secretly executed by the NKVD and buried in a mass grave. The most plausible explanation I have heard is that Stalin wanted to convert these captured Polish officers to Communism, but they would have none of it, and so they were of no use to him. As Stalin could not do away with them openly, he had it done secretly.
