Why did Russians like Stalin?

Not all of them. Some, who were opponents of earlier communist regimes did, but others viewed him as a tyrant. Others thought that if he hadn't been the leader of the USSR, World War II might not have been won and that he was a good leader. And yes, he led purges against his own people.

Russians often rather adored Stalin. He was pictured as the grand leader of the Revolution, and the father of the government that had pulled them out of what they were told were the horrible years where they were controlled by the bourgeoisie, the rich land owners. They were taught from an early age that this was true, and even when they were starving, were overworked, freezing, and people they knew were being kidnapped by the secret police, they still believed that Stalin was their savior and hero.

Some people very much disliked Stalin however, specifically in the Ukraine area. Stalin had stolen their food and shared it with the rest of the country, and used it to fund the war effort.

Very simple answer. Russians looked to him for guidance and strength during world war 11. He provided that but with a horrific cost of millions of lives of people who didn't conform to his world view.

Lenin did like Stalin, but was very much against Stalin ever gaining power.

Some people think he was, and although he resulted in hordes of bad effects on the USSR, it is un-doubtful he did some very major beneficial things.
