She became a saint because she was one of the first to know about Mother Mary becoming the Lord's mother. She was also a very well known holy person, and was recognized for that. Plus think of all she went through being the mother St. John the Baptist. He was beheaded and she was the mother of him. Many people probably made her feel bad. Most people would give up and change their ways, but she didn't. She stuck to her beliefs. She was very devoted. I think, mind you, that she was spectacular person and saint.

Saint Elizabeth, the mother of Saint John the Baptist, was canonized as a saint in 1235 by Pope Gregory IX. She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church and her feast day is celebrated on November 5th.

∙ 13y agoVery little information about her survives. Elizabeth Rose was a Benedictine nun at Chelles, France. She founded the convent of Sainte-Marie-du-Rozoy, near Courtenay, Loiret, France, and served as its first abbess. Eventually she retired to live as an anchoress in a hollow oak tree.

∙ 13y agoSt. Elizabeth was declared a saint before the official canonization process was instituted in the 12th century. She would have been declared a saint to the bishop by those who knew her best and were familiar with his life and merits. The local bishop would them make the decision. Today only the pope can declare saints after years of study by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican. The church does not create saints. Only God can do that. The Church "screens" candidates for sainthood to determine if they had a life worthy of emmulation. In other words, do they make good role models. Also, the Church has to be assured that the person is actually in Heaven. That is the reason that today a number of miracles must be verified before a person can be declared a saint.

∙ 11y agoThe early church made her one. They also made her hisband, Zacharias, one. This was before the RC church decioded that there were conditions to sainthood (like two miracles) - they were made saints simply because their offspring was John the Baptist and Elizabeth was sister to Mary.
