Sandy was Sodapop's girlfriend (later ex-girlfriend) who he was sure he was going to marry. It broke his heart, when she left to go live with her grandmother in Florida because she got pregnant. Soda later runs off, saying he hates being in the middle, and it makes him feel more worse because she left him, and he loved her so much. She is mentioned once in the film, but Sodapop never says she moved or got pregnant.
She was pregnant. However, NOT by Soda. His caring loving nature made him want to marry her anyway and he was devastated when she left.
Why did she leave? Of course this is a matter of interpretation, but her parents sent her to live with an out of state relative due to her pregnancy, which was obviously 'out-of-wedlock' and was not socially acceptable at the time. Social attitudes have much changed over the last 40 years; thus making it easier on unwed mothers to not only have (publically) but keep their babies. It has not always been so, as is illustrated in this book (although between the lines).
Up until the mid 70's or so, if an young woman came up pregnant and unmarried, they typically were sent 'away' to have the baby. In this case she was sent to Florida to live with a relative. Many times they were sent to Unwed Mother's Homes until they delivered; leaving their baby behind and up for adoption.

Sandy got knocked up (pregnant) at a young age so she had to move far away to her aunt's house in some other state. I read the last page of the first chapter and it didn't say anything about her getting knocked up! Here's what I found (pg 18, Soda speaking) "I think I'm gonna marry Sandy. After she gets out of school and I get a better job and everything. I might wait till you get out of school though. So i can still help Darry with the bills and stuff." I also found this: Pony asked Soda if he was going to take Sandy to the party, so Soda replied that she went to live with her grandmother in Florida.
