They also settled in North and South Dakota. They were progressive in their politcs and found a home in the Democratic Party until Lincoln became President in 1861. They were adamantly oppossed to slavery and favored the new Republican Party that was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1856. They also brought their faith, the Lutheran Church, to the Upper Midwest which is still the largest Protestant denomination in these states!
