It was comissioned by Professor J. P. Neumann (a churchman) of the Polytechnic School of Vienna to set text that Neumann had written, in German. The piece was intended for amateurs and thus was meant to be as easy as possible. Making the piece's language the native language of the choir would probably have made things easier for them. Bear in mind that Neumann's text was new: choirs would have been used to the Mass in Latin, but a new text in Latin may have been unnecessarily challenging.
