It's Marley's way of trying to get Scrooge to change his miserly life to that of someone that knows fellow feelin, keeps Christmas and lives a life where he can help those less fortunate. He is shown the alternative: die alone and have eternal torment.
Scrooge hung his head because he was reflecting on the consequences of his past actions and feeling regretful for how he had mistreated others. This self-reflection led him to recognize the errors of his ways and prompted his transformation towards becoming a more compassionate and generous person.
Instave 2 Scrooge is seen doing this when he realses how he well was treated by Mr Fezziwig and compars this to the way he has treated his faithful employee Bob Cratchit

Scrooge managed to get rid of the ghost by grabbing its extinguisher cap and putting it back on. The ghost then twisted the extinguisher's side-arm and disappeared, leaving Scrooge alone in his bedroom.

Scrooge doesnt refuse to recognise the images , he suspects that the dead man is him but needs the ghost to confirm this . It is only when he is taken to the grave yard that Scrooge has this confirmation seeing his name carved into the head stone
