From 1953 through 1970, South Carolina played in the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning the 1969 ACC championship. From 1971 through 1991, they competed as a major Independent, producing 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and a #11 Final AP Poll ranking in 1984 (having reached #2 earlier that season). The Gamecocks have been led by two National Coaches of the Year, Joe Morrison and Lou Holtz, and have 15 bowl appearances, highlighted by four Gator Bowl and three Outback Bowl trips. The Gamecocks have been a member of the Southeastern Conference since 1992.
Never, Clemson's never been in the SEC they are in the ACC but South Carolina's last win was in 2006. But Clemson owns South Carolina and everyone knows that, even South Carolina fans.

Back in 1970 teams did not make the NCAA tournament unless they won their conference title. In 1970, South Carolina played in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina State beat South Carolina in the ACC tournament so they won the bid to go to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Only one conference title in 1969 they were ACC champions. Also in 2010, they one their division are were SEC East champions. But, they have never claimed a National Title.
