France and Spain supported the patriot cause because of their own land holdings in North America. They did not want to see the British is control of such a large portion of the continent. Presumably, they wanted to stay in the good graces of the people living there, as well.

∙ 11y agoThe moment they saw that France had allied with the Patriots they wanted to ally with them too. They saw the opportunity to overthrow Britain, who was then the greatest military force in the world.

Spain hoped to recapture Gibraltar and Minorca from England and perhaps to gain some British territory in the West Indies. They probably considered the US to be less of a threat to their holding in Louisiana than the British would be if they won the war.

∙ 13y agoSpain certainly provided able assistance to the Patriots, but unlike the French after the Battle of Saratoga, they never became the Patriots Allies. Any and all assistance was provided covertly.
