Bones of contention were religion as well as Elizabeth's refusal to acknowledge that he had saved her life by getting her sister, Mary I, to release her from prison and forgive her. When Elizabeth crossed the line, going to war in the Netherlands in support of the Dutch Protestant King, Philip felt this was the point of no return and launched the Spanish Armada towards Britain.
