Read "Icebreaker" -free online- by Viktor Suvorov, a Russian defector. Stalin was most definitely planning on invading Europe after Germany, its ally, had subjugated it. Stalin needed Hitler to be the "Icebreaker" to breakup European democracies so when his Red Army did invade it would be welcomed as a liberator. Stalin was extraordinarily effective at masking his megalomania towards the world; practically to this day his thoroughly false claim to have been only interested in building Socialism in his nation, and no others, is believed. As Suvorov so pithily said, in the late 1920's Adolf Shickelgruber has no idea that he was going to be a world conqueror but Stalin most certainly was, and was laying detailed plans to do so.
World War 2 was planned in the Kremlin right down to the invasion of Britain. What Stalin did not count on was German military intelligence finding out about his plans and beating him to the punch, by a mere two weeks. It is fact that Stalin was so completely blown away by Germany's deceit - after all he thought Hitler was monumentally stupid - that he suffered a total nervous breakdown and was incapacitated for days after the invasion began.
Stalin joined the Allies in World War Two because Hitler had invaded the USSR.
The Germans were against Communism (they even formed a pact with Italy and Japan against Communism in 1936), but the Soviet Union decided to team up with Germany in 1939 (Molotov Ribbentrop pact), even though Stalin was aware of the fact that Germany was against Communism (and even though Stalin was against Nazism). But Stalin wanted to expand and spread Communism, he felt that his chances of achieving this were higher when teaming up with Hitler. But when Hitler invaded Russia in 1941 Stalin had no other choice to team up with the Allied countries.
Stalin, by not fighting against Germany, was able to take the remainder of Poland and other areas of Eastern Europe without fear of reprisal by the Allies, whose biggest threat was Nazi Germany. However, Hitler wanted to seize the resources of Russia and the Ukraine to power his war machine, and conquest of the Soviets looked like an easier path than alliance.
During World War 2 in 1942-1944, Stalin wanted the US & British armies to land in France as soon as possible (as a 'Second Front') to take some pressure off the Soviet Union, which was fighting the German Army on the Eastern Front.
I'm pretty sure he wanted to gain control of Europe. I may be wrong though.
A second front would have helped to take the pressure off of Russia .
Hitler attacked him.

Joseph Stalin became the leader of the Soviet Union prior to World War II. He initially supported the Axis powers, but when Stalin predicted the defeat of the Axis powers, he attempted to join the Allies power and end connections of the Axis. Stalin initially was a supporter of the Axis Powers but after Hitler ordered and carried out the invasion of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin joined the Allied Forces.
If you think to Soviet Union allies Romania was allied with them at 23.08.1944.This was the beginning of the subordination of the country to Stalin.

World War I
The democratic West feared that communism might gain credence and add to labor unrest. Stalin lived in constant fear that the US and the UK might join forces with Germany in an attempt to destroy Russia.
