Stephenie didn't actually choose who played who herself. It was the directors choice, however Stephenie was given an opinion - though if she disagreed he probably would have been cast anyway. Personally I don't think Robert Pattinson's very good at being Edward, his appearance is completely wrong and he doesn't understand the emotional teenage alienation of Edward.
