Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence, expressed the belief that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. He made this statement in order to oppose the existing system of aristocracy, by which some people were thought to be born with common blood, while others, born with noble blood, were inherently superior, and those few born with royal blood were best of all, and were entitled to rule everyone else. He was not even thinking about such issues as slavery or racial segregation, although of course, the concept that all men (or all people) are created equal is highly relevant to issues of discrimination or segregation. It required later thinkers such as Abraham Lincoln to see the relevance.
