Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense in 1776 to educate the general public and inspire them to claim their freedom. Because so many people were used to British rule, it was a paving stone in the path to embracing the new political system. He wanted readers to understand that as Americans they needed to relearn their patterns and continue to take responsibility for their decisions and activities in the building of a democracy. It was intentionally written in simpler language so that the often nearly illiterate population could find a way to interpret his meaning.
