Well before any US troops were sent to Vietnam. The Korean Conflict kicked off in 1950, and the ceasefire was signed in 1953 (although the conflict remains ongoing). The first American troops didn't arrive in Vietnam until 1954.
The Vietnam War claimed it first US Casualties on 6 May 1954 at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu although they were flying for the CIA and not for the US Army. Dwight David Eisenhower had been the President of the United States for 15 months at that moment in history.
