There is no single reason but a combination of events and reasons that led up to it. They expanded heavily and quickly in the wake of the dot.com boom and this was quickly followed by Sept 11th 2001 with 2 of their planes being involved. They had already had extensive labor disputes and given staff and pilots in particular a huge pay rise. After that fuel costs began to sky-rocket. This combination of factors along with constantly increasing competition from the likes of Southwest led to it seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
