Let's start off with some background knowledge:

Originally, the settlers in Virginia, Jamestown, were given a charter, the "Virginia Charter" in 1606 by the Virginia Company.

The colonists were mainly investors looking to find gold in Virginia, but because there was a lack of farmers and no one wanted to worked, Jamestown didn't prosper. The local Native Americans, the Powhatan Indians (also spelled Powatan and Powhaten) helped them by giving them some food, but it wasn't enough.

Eventually, when England sent someone to govern them named John Smith, they began to prosper again. He set up rules, the most important rule being "he who works not, eats not." Also, John Smith and the rest of Jamestown raided the Powhatan tribes in order to obtain more food to feed Jamestown. This led to rising tensions between Jamestown and Powhatan.

Jump forward a few years, and the Virginia Company starts to go bankrupt trying to send food and protection because the Powhatan Indians attack Jamestown. Finally, in 1624, King James Irevoked the Virginia Charter and just made it a royal colony.

Hoped this helped!
