He was a playwright; it was his job. it was a reaction toward Shakespeare's society ;;
There were Wars and Rebellions going on. One interesting current event is that reports came out about a ship which had been shipwrecked in the Bahamas. Some people think those reports were used by Shakespeare as a source in his play.
There is no obvious single source for The Tempest, but there are parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbe novo, and an eyewitness report by William Strachey of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda.
Much of Prospero's renunciative speech is taken word for word from a speech by Medea in Ovid's poem Metamorphoses.
A lot of scholars seem to think that the wreck of the ship the Sea Venture in 1609 on Bermuda might have inspired the story of the shipwrecked characters in the play. At least one account of the events was published in 1610. Scholars tend to argue about which account, if any, Shakespeare read and used for the play. I say "if any" because some scholars believe that The Tempest had nothing whatsoever to do with the Sea Venture.
