An angel appeared to Zechariah before John was born and told Zechariah that his wife would bear a son and that he was to name him John. Zechariah at first could not believe this, because his wife was too old to bear children. As a result he was struck dumb until after his son was born. (Luke 1:5-25) When asked what he wished to name the child, Zechariah wrote "His name is John" on a tablet, whereon he immediately recovered his speech. (Luke 1:57-66)
