Battle of DunkirkFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Battle of Dunkirk was a battle in the Second World War between the Allies and Germany. A part of the Battle of France on the Western Front, the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe from 24 May to 4 June 1940.After the Phoney War, the Battle of France began in earnest on 10 May 1940. To the east, the German Army Group B invaded and subdued the Netherlands and advanced westwards through Belgium. In response, the Supreme Allied Commander French General Maurice Gamelin initiated "Plan D" which relied heavily on the Maginot Line fortifications. Gamelin committed the forces under his command, three mechanised armies, the French First and Seventh and the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) to the River Dyle. On 14 May, German Army Group A burst through the Ardennes and advanced rapidly to the west toward Sedan, then turned northwards to the English Channel, in what Generalfeldmarschall Erich von Manstein called the "sickle cut" (known as "Plan Yellow" or the Manstein Plan), effectively flanking the Allied forces.
Dunkirk helped get about half a million allied soldiers to safety and off Dunkirk beach. These soldiers were prisoners, and these could then help in the war on land.Let's explain what Dunkirk was first. Dunkirk is a port town in France on the English Channel. After France and Great Britain went to war with Germany they were great defeated by Germanies Bltizkreig or Lightning war. They were pushed back to Dunkirk and forced to retreat back to England. Thousands of British and some French troops crossed the Channel on Civilian and Military warships. This retreat/battle was important beacause it meant Germany had complete control over Europe until they invaded Russia in 1941. After Dunkirk Germany started Operation Sealion (The invasion of England). So it was not so important for the United Kingdom but Germany since the United Kingdom really just lost thousands of men and was forced from direct land combat. Hope this helped.
Operation Dynamo was the evacuation of around 338,000 allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in Northern France between 28 May and 4 June 1940. They managed to escape before they were about to be surrounded by the advancing German Army.

At Dunkirk the British Expeditionary Force, section of the army, were forced to retreat from Nazi occupied France. Upon reaching the coast, at Dunkirk, they met hundreds of small civilian British boats from across the channel called up to transport the men from the beach to the larger ships. They did this under the attack of the German Air-force.

During World War II, the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, France and attacked the Germans there. Today, nothing new is on the beaches, except for monuments and memorials for the heroic soldiers who fought there.
Because a large part of the British Army and its equipment was trapped in the Dunkirk area in June 1940. If the troops hadn't been evacuated in large numbers, the war would have been more or less over because there would have not been an army left to fight on.
