If they didn't, Hitler would track them down and separate them from each other and put them each in a concentration camp. They would die.

Margot received a letter from the Nazi's asking for her (as they picked out random people) They had to reply otherwise the Nazis would come looking for them and take them to the concentration camps and starve them. this is why they had to go and hide in the secret annex.

Anne Frank parents had plan to move into the secret annex with was situated in the attic of Otto Frank (Anne's dad) building once Hilter raised to power. However, they moved in weeks before they had planned when Margot Frank got a call-up from Central Office for Jewish Emigration ordering her to report for relocation to a work camp. They moved into the secret annex on 6 July 1942 where they were joined a week later by the van Pels family and later in November by Fritz Pfeffer.

Anne Frank's family hiding place was discovered because an anonymous tip was given to the Nazis, most likely by a local Dutch informant. The informant revealed the location of the secret annex where the Frank family was hiding, leading to their arrest.

They had intended to go into hiding about July 16th, by which time (it was planned) the annex would be all set up and everything in order. Then Margot got her call-up notice on Sunday July 5.

They decided they had to go into hiding immediately, and did the next day, July 6th. They had to completely set up and straighten out the annex by themselves, but this took only a day or so.

Someone who shall remain nameless knew of it's existence and turned them in.

People were being paid money to turn in Jewish people and doing so could sometimes cancel out their own debts.

Because Hitler was taking all the Jews to concentration, murder, and death camps. It was unsafe to be outside. Mr. Kraler and Miep offered the Franks their secret annex to hide in.
