Jackson and Calhoun were doomed to split, as Calhoun tried to have Jackson arrested in 1819 in the Florida invasion, then lied about it for years to Jackson. The Peggy Eaton situation exacerbated the situation, as Calhoun's wife Floride was entirely opposed to the entrance of Peggy into society and began the social war that led to the firing of Jackson's cabinet and the secretary of war chasing the secretary of the treasury with loaded weapons and intent to kill. When in the middle of the petticoat affair, when Jackson was already upset with Calhoun for his opposition to Peggy's place in society, Jackson was informed that Calhoun had lied about Florida, Jackson split with Calhoun completely.
