Beardsley primarily used black and white because it was faster than painting in oil or watercolors. He did, however, paint two oil painting and tinted some of his drawings with watercolor wash. The reason for his haste was his fast-advancing tuberculosis. He knew from about 1890 that he would not outlive the decade, and so he adopted his trademark black-and-white style, producing sometimes up to 20 small drawings a day.
