Henry II summoned Thomas Becket to a great council at Northampton castle on the 8th of October 1164 to answer allegations of contempt of royal authority and malfeasance in the Lord Chancellor's office.

Henry pursued him but Lewis VII of France greeted him with respect and offered to protect him for a while.
