The American colonists were British citizens, but they were denied the right to have representatives in the British government - a guaranteed right of those citizens still residing in England. It was known as "Taxation without Representation" and was one of several reasons that the colonists decided to rebel against "Mother England" and King George.

The British Parliament were imposing very high taxes on all products that were being shipped to the colonies. The colonists had no way to voice their objections within the British government because there was no one to represent them. This caused the colonists to increase their desire to gain their independence.
The colonists felt that the Stamp Act and other British taxes that were being imposed on them by the British Parliament were unfair without having representation. To protest these taxes the colonists refused to purchase the goods that were being sent in from Great Britain.
