Mainly it was because when they were handing out potions, medicines, if the patient had a medical reaction to the medicine they could have a chance of catching an illness or at the worst, death. They wore masks to hide identity, so they werent a known man in the area, also so they didnt lose business. Another theory is that they wore the masks because it was widespread that birds spread the plague and if they wore it, this would direct the plague to the mask, away from the victim. Best answer I have thanks.

For some time, including around the time of the Black Plague, the long "beaks" of the bird masks would be stuffed with spices and incense, which was thought to fulfil two purposes - firstly and most importantly, it would cover the stench of death and disease, and some wearers thought that by wearing it they were warding off the diseases.

Why does BATMAN wear a mask? Same kind of question...they could get close to the sick and later go to the PUB. No one knew what the doctor looked like...so he could have a life. An early form of today's masks. They did not know how the disease spread.

They THought it was due to bad air so they wore bird like face masks with beaks so they could but herbs and other good smelling thing like plants and such in the beak and they would use canes to administer medical care and would basically be wearing a radiation suit which during the pubonic plague would be wearing clothing on all parts of your body.

Doctors wore a masks with a bird-like beak to protect them from being infected by deadly diseases such as the Black Death, which they believed was airborne. In fact, they thought disease was spread by miasma, a noxious form of ‘bad air.’

It was allegedly a thing worn during the black plague when medical science was basically nonexistant. People thought diseases came from 'miasma' which basically meant 'bad air'.

So the idea was that the beak would have sweet smelling agents like potpourri or other spices in it to counteract the bad air and protect the doctor.

Except that alot of medical historians think that it never happened. That these masks were invented centuries later and made their way into artwork about the black plague, becoming part of the legend. It's hard to know for sure either way.

They were treating the sick (obviously) during the Black Death and The Great Plague. The disease was almost airborne and spread very easily and the doctors were aware of this. They had the mask to filter the air but also they always had special mixes of herbs and flowers in the 'beaks' because they believed that they 'purified' the air.

Plague doctors—who wore beaked masks containing aromatic substances, waxed coats, and gloves—were common during the bubonic plagues that struck Italy in the Renaissance period. But the forbidding ensemble was not just a deathly fashion statement: It was intended to protect the doctor from miasma.

Actually, yes. Shortly after parcel post was introduced in the early 1900s, several parents sent their small children though the mail. This was done with the help of sympathetic postal workers, most commonly over short distances in rural areas. And it was cost effective—in 1913, it cost just 15 cents to mail an 8-month-old baby to his grandmother.

Before you get any big ideas, though, know that the fun came to an end in 1920 when the postmaster general officially outlawed sending people through the mail. How lame.

In the 17th century, people believed these outfits could purify poisonous air.

During the 17th-century European plague, physicians wore beaked masks, leather gloves, and long coats in an attempt to fend off the disease.

Do face masks expire?

“No” Face Masks like surgical masks or medical masks get expired after one use because these masks are made up for use only once, it does not reusable so it does not that protective to use twice. There is a high risk of attacking viruses or gems when they get used for 2nd or 3rd time. What herbs were used in the plague doctors mask?

AnswerThe masks were made of stiffened cloth and painted to look like bird beaks. One reason for this was that some people thought birds spread the plague, so wearing a bird mask was a sort of reverse charm against it, and another reason was to keep your face and nose as far from the "bad air" as possible to avoid contracting the disease.
