During the Black Plague, the cause of the deadly disease was unknown and many believed it to be an airborne illness. As a result many doctors wore bird-like masks to shield their faces and keep herbs in the "beak" to fend of the sickness.

During the black plague apothecaries wore them to be easily spotted in a crowd. They would also fill their masks with herbs and perfumes to prevent themselves from catching the plague.

How were masks used in the Middle Ages?

Yes there were masks, but they were not worn for the reason we wear them. They were worn to protect the wearer from the plague. It was thought that if you wore one with a long beak that held herbs that it would protect from getting the plague. Most commonly the doctors wore them.

Why did the doctors wear masks during the plague?

the doctors wore the plague mask because the plague was thought to be spread by birds so that when they treated a person with the plague it would be drawn into their garments because the mask was shaped like a bird.

Why did the doctors in the middle ages look so creepy?

You might be referring to pictures of doctors who treated patients during the Black Plague, though I would have to have more information to be sure. They believed that the plague came from bad air, and that by filtering the air, or exposing it to something that might modify it (as by making it smell good) they could keep themselves from getting the plague. So they wore funny masks that had long objects over their noses that looked more or less like the beaks of birds, into which they could put something to treat the air they breathed.

What is the mask called that plague doctors wore over there noses?

They were called beak masks because the looked like exaggerated long bird beaks.

What did doctors wear to stay away from the black death?

Long pointed "bird beak" masks.

Why did doctors wear bird like face masks?

Mainly it was because when they were handing out potions, medicines, if the patient had a medical reaction to the medicine they could have a chance of catching an illness or at the worst, death. They wore masks to hide identity, so they werent a known man in the area, also so they didnt lose business. Another theory is that they wore the masks because it was widespread that birds spread the plague and if they wore it, this would direct the plague to the mask, away from the victim. Best answer I have thanks. For some time, including around the time of the Black Plague, the long "beaks" of the bird masks would be stuffed with spices and incense, which was thought to fulfil two purposes - firstly and most importantly, it would cover the stench of death and disease, and some wearers thought that by wearing it they were warding off the diseases.

Why do the doctor in assassins creed 2 were masks?

if you want to get technical, the doctors of those days wore beak shaped masks with a small breathing hole on the tip. they used to stuff the beaks with a sort of popourie of dried flowers for they beleived that the sweet smell of flowers would ward off the plague. the masks that those doctors wore are considered to be the earliest type of gasmask, save for people covering their mouths with cloth. not only did they put dried flowers into their masks, but also in the lining of their coats for the same purpose of warding off disease

What was some misconceptions about the black plaque?

Most people think it was the Rats that caused the plague but in reality it was actually the Fleas on the Rats that carried the disease, the Rats were just "transporters" for the actual carriers. Another thing people during the time of the plague was the use of Crow-like masks fulled with flowery smelling plants etc. They thought this would filter out the Black Death, little did they know it wasn't airborne but transferred by blood hence the fleas. ----- People looked at it as God's punishment.
