Most people think it was the Rats that caused the plague but in reality it was actually the Fleas on the Rats that carried the disease, the Rats were just "transporters" for the actual carriers.

Another thing people during the time of the plague was the use of Crow-like masks fulled with flowery smelling plants etc. They thought this would filter out the Black Death, little did they know it wasn't airborne but transferred by blood hence the fleas.
