It appealed to women because it vastly improved the quantity of their lives.
It offered them greater security and equality in their marriages. Christianity forbid the common practice of infanticide of female babies. It was against abortions, which at that time were forced upon women by their husbands. Christian women married when they were ready physically and emotionally..as opposed to the arranged child marriages, ie young girls married to much older men common in the early Greco-Roman world. Sexual promiscuity was forbidden for women AND men. Marriages were more successful, more babies were born.
There is a huge difference between the Christianity of Jesus Christ and the Christianity created by men, which is flawed and corrupt. Jesus saw women and men as equals. Obviously later in history the Christianity of MEN....ended up treating women horribly. But at the beginning of the Christianity of Jesus, women held positions of authority within the new church s. They were respected. As their numbers increased (due to ending female infanticide and overall better conditions) the abundance of Christian women lead to many intermarriages, which then lead to secondary conversions, which contributed to the growth of Christianity.

In early Christianity in the Roman Empire, there were many other religions competing with Christianity. To increase the appeal of Christianity, they fused many non-Christian festivals with a Christian overlay. For example, Christmas is the festival for the winter solstice. Since the roots of much of our celebration of Christmas are outside Christianity, some Christians choose not to celebrate the holiday.
Society for the Study of Early Christianity was created in 1987.
