Why did edward miss biology class?

He missed Biology class to go feed on the blood of animals. If you notice when Bella first arrived his eyes were black which meant he was thirsty and he wanted her. But he left to hunt animals to somewhat satisfy his thirst so he could return without any harm to Bella.
