The where traditionally known as 'the untouchables' but a great Indian leader Ghandhi, changed their names to harijans, meaning children of God. Their main jobs where to sweep the streets, kill animals and other gross stuff. They where considered worthless.
Gandhi has something to do with the untouchables but i dont know what
--In India the untouchables, or Dalits, are the objects of extreme prejudice and discrimination. --The Untouchables TV series (1959-1963) focused on a group of Prohibition Agents in Chicago during the 1930's. Because of their courage and incorruptibility they were nicknamed The Untouchables. It was made into a movie by the same name in 1987.
Gandhi was born into the Kshatriya caste but spent much of his life trying to gain equality for the "Untouchables."
People who do the most meanial work in India, involving dirt, bodily functions, cleaning work, etc. are known as the "Untouchables". Other names used for this caste are "Scheduled Caste" due to the high frequency of being listed on government 'schedules' (for assistance/support); 'Dalit' (a Hindi word meaning "downtrodden"); and 'Harijans', a term used by Mahatma Gandhi, meaning "Children of God".
Mahatma Gandhi renamed the "untouchables" as "Harijans," which means "children of God," to uplift their social status and fight against the caste system in India. By giving them a new name, Gandhi aimed to promote equality and dignity among all individuals regardless of their caste. This renaming was part of Gandhi's broader efforts to eradicate discrimination and create a more inclusive society.

Mahatma Gandhi advocated for the rights and upliftment of women and "untouchables," whom he referred to as Harijans, meaning "children of God." He championed women's participation in the independence movement, encouraging them to take on active roles in social and political spheres. For the untouchables, Gandhi fought against the caste system, promoting their dignity and advocating for their inclusion in society. He emphasized the need for social reform, urging people to treat them with respect and equality.
The Untouchables, called in India the Harijans.
i think it was the other way round
He thought of "separate electorates" for the oppressed class of what were then called untouchables (or Harijans in Gandhi's vocabulary, and dalits in today's language) as a retrograde measure meant to produce permanent divisions within Hindu society. Gandhi earned the hostility of Ambedkar, the leader of the untouchables, but few doubted that Gandhi was genuinely interested in removing the serious disabilities from which they suffered, just as no one doubt that Gandhi never accepted the argument that Hindus and Muslims constituted two separate elements in Indian society.
