Why did general Sherman and general Grant want to wage a total war?

Sherman used total war tactics because it broke down the society of the war, it also destroyed the economy and helped bring the war to and end. Sherman pretty much said, don't mess with the union. Sherman knew that the soldiers received support and encouragement from the civilians back at home. The Confederates could go on fighting as long as they received food and supplies from those back at home. He wanted to destroy the will to fight for both the soldiers and the civilians. Soldiers did not want to fight if they were worried that their homes would be destroyed or their families were suffering.

The existence of what Southern institution explains why the South had few cities and little industry?

If you want to pass your class, you should tell your teacher that slavery prevented the south from having major cities and industries. You should not do the original research and see the amount of weapons and ammunition that went up the Tennessee River before the union army captured Chattanooga. You should ignore the reason General Sherman destroyed the five railroads going into and out of Atlanta and why he burned the factories of Atlanta. After destroying transportation and factories across Georgia, why did Sherman take the route north toward Richmond, Virginia, that he took? In stead of marching the most direct route, he went to Columbia, South Carolina. He went to the fall line where the factories had their water wheels. He marched north destroying the South's industrial base. Still, it is more important to get a passing grade than to know what really happened!
