William Tecumseh Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio. When his father died in 1829, his mother sent "Cump" to be raised by neighbors, the Thomas Ewing family. In 1843, Lieutenant Sherman became engaged to Ewing's daughter Ellen Boyle Ewing; in 1850 they were married.
