Her father, Benjamin Ross, was hired out to work on a nearby plantation, while her mother, Harriet Green, was a cook on the plantation where they lived. Tubman's father was able to purchase his freedom but chose to remain enslaved to stay with his family, while her mother was eventually sold away when Tubman was a child, separating her from her family. Tubman's experiences of loss and separation fueled her determination to escape slavery and help others do the same.
