I believe they were hunted by humans but a younger species, They were probably the biggest and safest option to hunt in those times. Also the people would want to get the biggest amount of meat to last for the longest time as they wouldn't know when there next meal was going to be.

In the Ice age humans hunted mammoths. They used their tusks for buildings, necklaces and other things and they used fur for clothes. :-)
