On dieciséis de septiembre (September 16) he rang a church bell and started the war of independence, Mexican Independence Day. The date is analogous to July 4, 1776 in the United States when the Continental Congress declared its independence from England. It was a long drawn out war. By about 1821 the Spanish army had been driven out of Mexico. The president did not want it to be independent, but under the Council of the Indies. Spain made several attempts to recapture Mexico.
