He didn't, all he invented was a paving composed of tar and gravel that was given the name tarmacadam, later shortened to tarmac. Now known as asphalt on US roads, it is still called tarmac on airports everywhere.

John McAdam didn't invent turnpikes. He was a road engineer who began working on turnpikes about 1800. The first English turnpike was established in 1663.
John Loudon McAdam has written: 'Observations on the management of trusts for the care of turnpike roads' -- subject(s): Roads 'A practical essay on the scientific repair and preservation of public roads' -- subject(s): Design and construction, Macadamized Roads, Maintenance and repair, Roads
John Loudon McAdam, a Scottish road building expert, is credited with being the first to build tar surfaced roads. That is why they are called macadam roads.

John Loudon McAdam created roads to improve transportation efficiency and safety. He developed a new method of road construction, known as "macadamization," which involved layering small stones to create a smooth, durable surface that facilitated better drainage and reduced wear on vehicles. His innovations significantly enhanced the quality of roads, promoting trade and travel during the 19th century, and laid the groundwork for modern road construction techniques.
