Maryland Toleration Act, also known as the Act Concerning Religion, was passed in 1649 by the assembly of the Province of Maryland mandating religious toleration.
Lord Baltimore proposed the act to restrict the religious rights of Christians
The Maryland Colonial Assembly. The actual author however was probably Cecil Calvert, the 2nd Lord Baltimore.
Fearing that Catholics might lose their rights, Lord Baltimore got the assembly to pass the Act of Toleration in 1649. It welcomed all Christians and gave adult male Christians the right to vote and hold office.

The Toleration Act of 1649 ended in 1657 when the governor of Virginia regained lost land and had Lord Baltimore sign a treaty which restored religious freedom.

To ensure Marlyands's continued growth,Lord Baltimore welcomed Protestants as well as Catholics to the colony.Later on, Lord Baltimore came to fear that Protestants might try to deprive Catholics of their right to worship freely.
