Mark Antony was a relative of Julius Caesar, who was his mother's cousin. The two men were also best friends. Mark Antony served as staff officer in Caesar's legions in Gaul and was one of his best military commanders during Caesar's Gallic Wars. Caesar was Antony's patron and used his influence to have him elected to the public offices of quaestor and plebeian tribune and raised to augur priesthood.
