The Medieval Church played a far bigger part in Medieval England than the Church does today. All Medieval people believed that God, Heaven and Hell all existed. From the very earliest of ages, the people were taught that the only way they could get to Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church let them. Everybody would have been terrified of Hell and the people would have been told of the sheer horrors awaiting for them in Hell in the weekly services they attended.
Actually not all medieval people believed in Heaven and Hell, but it was dangerous to say so. Some ancient Greeks and Romans thought that Earth was not the centre of the Universe, but they lacked the scientific knowledge and tools to support alternate beliefs.
They thought about heaven and hell because they thought where people went after death, they also thought about 'how did we get here'?
According to the Holy Bible, heaven is eternal and never changes!

Christianity was important and almost forced people to believe in it or be killed. There were many crusades and battles in the name of Christianity during the Middle Ages.
They went on pilgrimages to make sure that God would send them to heaven instead of hell.
During the Middle Ages, the most common idea about spread of disease was that the cause was bad air, which they called maisma. Believe it or not, one result of this belief was that medieval people bathed a lot.
