Trench warfare is particularly bloody, artillery improvements took their toll, the inovations brought about by the machine gun and gas warfare made a quantum leap in warfare, poor planning and leadership effected the numbers, and political errors like Gallipoli took their toll.

WW1 had a higher mortality rate as opposed to other conflicts because technology had advanced much faster than the generals who directed the war were able to cope with.

The machine gun & artillery ranges and ammunition effectiveness were much better than in previous conflicts. Warfare provides a great necessity for better means of killing human beings on a larger scale.........

WW1 brought into existence both armoured and aerial warfare, which would both be far, far more effective in WW2. Cavalry had become obsolete as a means of combatting modern armed opposition.

It was a horrible war, one of the worst there has ever been. The weapons used were deadly- guns, tanks, planes dropping bombs, mustard gas,- and then there was pneumonia, starvation. Also, it was involving millions of people, and their ego was to kill as many of the opposition as possible, so blatnetly there wasn't much chance for anyone.

In others words:

1. New weapons came out and soldiers had to find out how to protect themselves against them.

2. Disease, hunger and shell shock killed soldiers a lot. (If you don't know what shell shock means then LOOK IT UP)

Because the power of Artillery & the Machine Gun were much more lethal then in previous conflicts: Quite why the Generals took so long to assimilate this I dont know, but then Gen Hindsight never had a defeat ! That defence was a more efficient way of fighting was not on the agenda. I suppose this is added to by saying that life was cheap..... Two things in particular made trench warfare possible: Tinned Food & the Railway.

In Britain The first men who went were members of the army, as the war progressed people started to volunteer, encouraged by women in the streets implying that they were cowards by doing things like handing them white feather ( a sign of cowardice). There was a strong sentiment that men had a duty to serve their countries and they were pressured by the public who didn't understand the situation on the front with the situation intensifed by a large amount of Propaganda in the media. In January 1916, Parliament passed the first conscription laws ever in Britain. At the start only single men and some widowers aged 18 to 41 were called up. By 1918 it had been extended to include all men aged 18 to 51. More than

2.3 million conscripts were enlisted before the end of the war in November, 1918.

Because this was the first real war since Napolean's times and there were many weapons invented to kill and maim in nasty ways. Shells literally obliterated men. One second they would be laughing and joking with their mates, next thing they're a red smear in the dirt. Ships were sunk, gas shells blinded and destroyed mens' lungs. There were mines and bombs and flamethrowers. All the terrible weapons of WWII saw service in WWI first. Tanks were invented in 1916. Air warfare grew in leaps and bounds. Also the generals didn't know about tactics. They used old tactics where they just threw their battalions at the opposite trenches without adequate preparation.
