Most Catholics light candles when praying for the dead, including monks if they have them available in their monastery.
The character of Monks is driven by jealousy, revenge and greed. As the story unfolds it is revealed that Monks who conspires with Fagin to turn Oliver into a criminal and destroy his reputation, is Oliver's paternal half-brother. Although he, unlike Oliver, is legitimate, he was born of a loveless marriage. Oliver's mother, Agnes, was their father's true love. Monks, whose real name is Edward Leeford, has spent many years searching for his father's other son - not to befriend him, but to destroy him and so become the sole beneficiary of their father's will. At the request of his benefactor, Mr Brownlow, Oliver, who received the whole inheritance (which proves to be meagre), gives Monks half because he wants to give him a second chance. Monks then emigrates to America, where he squanders his money, reverts to crime, and ultimately dies in prison.

Fagin was a Jewish receiver of stolen goods and leader of a gang of young theives and pickpockets in London. Many interpret the descriptions of Fagin to imply pedophelia. He's hired by Oliver's half-brother Monks to corrupt and later to kill Oliver, so Monks can inherit a fortune that should go to Oliver. Fagin is captured at the end of the book and hanged.
