Why did north like William Sherman?

They did not especially like him. He was not an agreeable personality. But his decision to cross Georgia undoubtedly shortened the war by several months at almost nil casualties.

Also, his capture of Atlanta helped to save Lincoln from being voted-out in the election of 1864.
