The northerners didn't hate slavery in the beginning. They didnt need it. Most farms were not very large like plantations and the industrial revolution started there so they had small farms and no need for slaves. Eventually the reformers came around and everyone who didnt use them realized who cruel having a slave was. Hope this helped.
many northeners learned about slavery by personal contact with slaves
because they had a war and Abraham Licoln won so there should be no slavery
That slavery promotes hate
You cannot really give a simple answer to that. Of course the northeners were outraged though. The northeners often thought that slavery was a horrible thing to do. It took away the africans rights as people. It made the northeners angry that people were being hurt, abused, and pretty much tortured every day, and that the slaves were pretty much given table scaps of food to live on. Such behavior was not acceptable to them and this controversy eventually led to the civil war.
Slavery was not spread to the north, first of all, because the north didnt industrialise their farming for cash crops. Another reason was because the north had bad soil conditions, so they could only far food. Most of all. Northeners were strongly against slavery because they thought it was wrong.
It made northeners capture runaway slaves. Northeners did not like this because if they were caught hiding a slave then they could be sentenced to jail time or even death.

There are many different answers to this question due to all of the different opinions of this topic. I feel that the legacy of slavery is hate. For example, in the time of slavery, lynching was a very popular way of executing a runaway slave. Today, nooses have been found on trees and on peoples doors. This is why I feel that hate is the legacy of slavery.
It was called the Patriots
