The main reason he invented the repeating rifle was out of need for a gun to fire more than 1 round of ammo without reloading(muzzleloading rifles). With the invention of the repeating rifle a man could load up to 10 rounds of ammo, and provide a lot more firepower than was available at that time in history.this firepower was applied to the indian wars outwest, along with military applications. You must remember that we are talking about 1866-1870 time frame when most rifles were of a type that shot 1 round of ammo and then had to be loaded at the muzzle with blackpowder, then a patched roundball or minnie ball projectile rammed down the bore, and then capped with a musket cap. This took alot of time to do let alone while you may have been being shot at.

By and large, Benjamin Henry. Oliver Winchester reorganized the New haven Arms Company to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company when Henry tried to take over New Haven, feeling he had been under compensated for the design of the Henry Repeating Rifle. Winchester immediately had parts of the Henry Rifle redesigned for the Model 1866. Winchester had the magazine improved, a loading gate was added to the right side of the receiver (a Nelson King design), and wooden forearms were added, but other elements of the rifle remained the same as the Henry such as the ammunition it fired, and the double firing pin.
The great-grandaddy of the Winchester lever action rifle was the Volcanic pistol, developed by Smith and Wesson. Oliver Winchester began buying stock in The Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855. The company name became the New Haven Arms Company in 1857 after both Smith and Wesson dropped their share of the ownership. In 1860 production of the Henry Rifle began. This is usually considered the first Winchester. I don't know exactly when the company became Winchester Repeating Arms, but the first gun to actually carry the Winchester name was the Model 1866.
B. Tyler Henry was a firearms designer hired by Oliver F. Winchester to help in the redesign of the unsuccessful Volcanic lever action rifle. The rifle we now call the "Henry" was the results. While not completely successful the rifle was a start for the New Haven Repeating Arms Co. which is the company we know today a Winchester.
