Why did people invent factories?

To help others, to gain money, to make life easier faster and better and also safer in some ways.

Factories began in England in the 1700's with the invention of the spinning Jenny for making cloth and in the late 1700's with the invention of interchangeable parts. Before interchangeable parts one man made one item at a time. If a part broke it would have to be remade to fit the new part. When interchangeable parts came about a product line could be set up where the parts were put together as they went down the line. This meant that more items could be produced by the factory instead of one man taking days or months to make one thing. Henry Ford really added to the use of factories for producing cars on an assembly line. With the assembly line each car was the same with the same parts and production goals could be set. Along with the invention of factories came the 40 hour week, and the invention of weekends. In 1886 factories in Wisconsin got the first 40 hour week for their workers and the first 5 day week was started.
